Update 2: Nier Automata director Yoko Taro tweeted about the secret church, and her response is as trolling as fans have come to expect from the developer.
“Want to learn about my insight?” tarot asks (opens in new tab). “In that case, you can find the answer on my Twitter profile. Thanks.”
For those wondering, Taro’s Twitter profile (opens in new tab) it says: “I can’t answer about any product. Please ask the publisher. I can’t reply to DM outside of work and acquaintance.”
For the record, we asked publisher Square Enix about the mysterious church. We’ll provide another update if we learn more.
Update: The mystery surrounding Nier Automata’s secret church deepens as the player who discovered it has provided more footage, modders have started digging deeper, and the game’s developers have made a few vague comments.
New images provided by sadfutago on Reddit (opens in new tab) it is about four minutes long and shows the A2 continuing down the meandering aisle towards the nave of the church. A short cutscene highlights a mannequin on an altar with a moon tear flower growing on his chest and an unkillable figure covered in black voxels.
Immediately after the cutscene, A2 and the capsule exchange briefly. A2 “Whoa. What is that?” says. The pane answers “Unknown”. A2 then says “You are useless”. (This talk is a pretty good metaphor for where the community is right now.) sadfutago notes (opens in new tab) said they had to “delete my Terraria and Far Cry 4” to save the video.
Members of the modding community contacted sadfutago for more details. This image appears to have been taken on a never-updated French Canadian PS4 copy of the game. Now players are scrambling to test various versions of the game to follow in the footsteps of sadfutago and see if they can open this secret door.
“So far, we haven’t found any evidence of this existence other than the tower itself in the late game,” says modder xxk_. Reddit post (opens in new tab). xxk_, “If this is a mod, this will be the first time anyone has done anything like this, and NOBODY knows how to make private doors as seen in the video – this would be a relatively AWESOME attempt for a single person to achieve with various modding breakthroughs.”
Meanwhile, Nier Automata producer Yosuke Saito is tweeting. first sent a chirp (opens in new tab) It says “eternal mystery” in English. Then one in Japanese, translation ataikimochi (opens in new tab), “This looks like something Yoko Taro would do. Lol.” Then came his own translation. chirp (opens in new tab) “First of all, please stay calm and book here,” he says, pointing to the pre-order link. Nier Automata’s upcoming Switch port.
On this last point, some fans growing persuasion (opens in new tab) Claiming that the church might actually be a Switch-exclusive space and that all this mystery is just a way of attracting public attention, he said it was some sort of viral marketing gimmick for the Switch port.
While each new possibility may seem as bizarre as the last, and whatever the truth, it remains fascinating to watch the story unfold.
Original story: A Nier Automata player stumbled upon what appeared to be a never-before-seen secret door, and this sudden revelation found the community “in confusion”.
A month ago a Reddit user called sadfutago made a post (opens in new tab) “How to enter the church?” Apparently, this player had opened a door to the interior of a church-style building in the Duplicated City and was trying to figure out how to get inside. The problem was that, according to the rest of the community, there was no such door.
Soon after, sadfutago is a a handful of screenshots (opens in new tab) and one short video (opens in new tab) It shows the way to the mysterious door. Some community members suspected it was fake, pointing out that the clip ended just after the door was opened. Up until this point, sadfutago replied, “I didn’t want to record too much because my mom told me not to take up space.”
For a month, nothing has happened so far. sadfutago released a longer clip (opens in new tab) It showcases what’s beyond the door, including special assets and animations that are unmatched elsewhere in the game.
Someone posted a random video on the Nier Automata subreddit showing they found a secret room in the Duplicated City. Until now, no one has been able to figure out how they uncovered this secret door. Literally 1 person in the world has accessed this room and we are out of our minds pic.twitter.com/g7W4JxiNDg25 July 2022
As a modder and data miner Lance McDonald puts (opens in new tab)“The community is devastated by this discovery.”
Members of the Nier Automata modding community say this area is unlikely to be created via mods, as fully new maps with unique animations are far beyond what modders’ tools can currently create.
This leaves us with three possibilities. Someone is either making an elaborate joke by creating a Nier Automata mod far beyond what other mod makers have made possible, making an even more elaborate joke by perfectly recreating a fake video of the game, or this door is really a new discovery that somehow goes unnoticed. five years since the game started. Whatever the truth, it is an extraordinary mystery.
Nier Automata is on its way to Switch In October if you are looking for a way to discover undiscovered mysteries on the go.
