Announcing during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, an “ambitious” survival MMO set in the Dune universe is on the way. Dune: Awakening is the latest game from Conan Exiles developer Funcom and is “inspired by both Frank Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning film as it explores exciting new possibilities in the franchise.” The game will be released for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
According to the press release, Dune: Awakening “combines the boldness and creativity of survival games with the social interaction of large-scale, persistent multiplayer to create a unique and ambitious open-world survival MMO.” The player will “have the chance to enter unpaired sectors and be the first to discover secrets and riches, narrowly avoid giant sandworms, build your home from the bunker to a powerful base, and traverse before the storms of coriolis once again change the sands and change the landscape” sand dunes in vehicles.”
When not exploring Arrakis on foot, players can deploy harvesters and defend them from rival factions in “fast-paced, deadly combat that seamlessly transitions from armored ground vehicles to ornithopters in the sky.” The press release also mentions a sort of ranking within the game where players can ascend through careful planning and building influence.
“Dune: Awakening truly promises to bring the world of Dune to life in an exciting new way. We’re excited to co-create this with such a veteran partner as Funcom,” said Sam Rappaport, vice president of Interactive Media at Legendary Entertainment. It captures the rich detail and wonder of cinematic worlds for gaming audiences.”
Dune: Awakening is scheduled to arrive on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is available now Wishlist on Steamand Beta registrations are now live official website.
