DETROIT – Dodge on Wednesday unveiled a new concept car called the Charger Daytona SRT as a preview of its first all-electric muscle car expected in 2024.

Automakers routinely use concept cars to gauge customer interest or show the future direction of a vehicle or brand. The vehicles are not designed to be sold to consumers.

But Kuniskis says many of the Charger Daytona SRT’s technologies and design elements are expected to turn it into a production vehicle.

“This is not a science project,” he said. “Looks like a Dodge, looks like a Dodge and drives like a Dodge.”

“We said, ‘OK, let’s do it like Dodge if it’s going to happen,'” Kuniskis said. “We’re not going to go out there and do the same thing. If we try to do the same thing as everyone else, Dodge will be lost.”

The exhaust system in the Charger concept, which Kuniskis says is as loud as a Hellcat engine, transmits the sound through an amplifier and tuning chamber located at the rear of the vehicle. He likened it to a wind organ with chambers and pipes.

He said the eRupt technology is a very fast transmission with “electro-mechanical shifting” that “provides different shift points” like today’s muscle and performance cars.

According to Stephanie Brinley, principal analyst at S&P Global, the innovations could help Dodge retain its performance characteristics and buyers who have purchased millions of Challengers and Chargers over the years.

“Exactly as you would expect it to be a two-door Dodge EV,” he said. “The piece looks, the role comes, and it’s pretty exciting.”

The “Fratzonic” exhaust references a Dodge logo called the “Fratzog” used from 1962 to 1976 – a word coined by a designer. It contains a split deltoid formed by the shape of three arrowheads forming a three-pointed star.

Kuniskis said some design elements and technologies are expected to affect the vehicles’ electric range, but that’s not something Dodge is concerned about.

“I don’t care; it’s a nuisance … it’s a muscle car,” said Kuniskis.
