Canada, Saskatchewan stabbings latest: Suspect Damien Sanderson found dead, brother still on the run

ICYMI: Two people are suspected of carrying out a knife attack in Saskatchewan in one of the bloodiest mass murders in Canadian history.

Myles Sanderson, 30, and Damien Sanderson, 31, were identified by police as two suspects believed to have carried out a series of stabbing attacks at 13 different locations between the James Smith Cree Nation and the small village of Weldon, about 25 km away. southeast of where the first attacks were reported.

ICYMI: The RCMP in Saskatchewan sent another public safety alert to the province Monday morning, stating that arrest warrants have now been issued for the two wanted suspects.

“Myles Sanderson is charged with: three counts of murder in the first degree, Section 235(1) of the Penal Code; one count, attempted murder, Criminal Code Section 239(b); and one count, search and enter – residency, Criminal Code Section 348(1)(b),” the CBC tweeted in an update by Sam Maciag on Monday.

“Damien Sanderson is charged with: one charge, first degree murder, Criminal Code Section 235(1); one count, attempted murder, Criminal Code Section 239(b); and a number, search and enter – residence, Section 348(1)(b), Criminal Code,” Maciag added later in the title.

The reporter added that the number of people injured in the explosion increased to 18.

ICYMI: One of the suspects wanted in connection with the deadly stabbing attacks on the James Smith Cree Nation on Sunday morning was previously known to law enforcement, Reuters reported.

Myles Sanderson, 30, identified as 6 feet and 1 inch tall with brown hair and brown eyes, weighing around 240 pounds, was said to have been listed as “illegally free” by the Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers in May.

The program is designed to work as an intermediary between the police and the public to find wanted persons.

Crime Stoppers gave no further details on why he was wanted.

ICYMI: Saskatchewan First Nations Veterans Association (SFNVA) confirmed on Facebook that one of his veterans, Earl Jones, was one of the victims killed in brutal attacks in two northern Saskatchewan communities on Sunday.

Noting that Burns is a member of Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, the group wrote, “SFNVA sends our deepest condolences to the Burns Family for the loss of the late Veteran Earl Burns.”

“We also send our thoughts and prayers to the James Smith community and the families of those affected. It is currently unknown when we will learn details for funeral services. We will keep the page updated when family advises us.”

His son, Earl Jones Jr, also appeared to have confirmed his father’s death in a Facebook post in which he offered his condolences for the loss of many friends and relatives.

“My heart is so broken that I still need you,” wrote his son.

In the comments below the post, the veteran was referred to by his friends and family members as a kind and cheerful person.

“I’ve always loved your father,” wrote a friend. “I remember how you made me/us laugh growing up playing hockey.”

“You had a wonderful father,” wrote a friend of hers named Linda-Marie Sanderson. “You son absolutely did a good job with him, he was proud of you and you respected him.”

ICYMI: Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said communities across the entire state and territory continue to feel nervous Monday morning as the manhunt continues for two suspects wanted in connection with the deadly stabbing that killed 10 people on Sunday.

“There is so much grief, so much anxiety, in our city and our communities this morning and all day yesterday,” Chief Bray said in a video he shared on his Twitter account.

“I really think an important step for the families and communities working on this will be to safely detain these two. And again, if anyone has any information, I urge you to reach out to your local police department and let us know,” he added early in the morning.

ICYMI: Residents of the otherwise placid James Smith Cree Nation told local news how they woke up early to a heavy police presence on Sunday’s holiday weekend and multiple cell phone alerts about the tragedy unfolding in the safety of their communities.

“I went to sleep and just woke up with all this news,” said Tracy Marion, manager of the James Smith community convenience store and gas station. Saskatoon Star Phoenix.

The population in the reserve is estimated at 1,892 according to their website, while the village of Weldon, the other multiple stabbing site, is said to have around 200 people.

“Mom. You never saw my sweet 16 that we both dreamed of so much. I never said goodbye. I will miss you so much. I don’t know what to do without you. Please answer me and tell me this was all a dream.. please come and visit with your car” were signed by someone who said they were Head’s child.

Head’s former partner, Michael Brett Burns, made a statement on Facebook to commemorate the mother of his children: “You will be missed very much, Lana. Thank you for your beautiful daughters and grandchildren. Love.”

Later that evening, Mr. Burns followed up this post, lamenting the loss of his children’s mother: “Oh my God, I’m just hurt and crying alone tonight :(”
