A popular device used to find lost items such as keys, wallet, or a bag is used by some Americans to monitor loved ones with dementia, says one report.
“The caretakers turned Apple’s tiny, $29 tracking devices Once you find other methods of monitoring people with dementia it is not convenient or very expensive. Many monitoring apps require people to have their phones with them. Caregivers say people with dementia can forget about them when they leave the house. But they tend to remember the keys and wallets AirTags are designed to attach to.” Wall Street Journal reports.
But public health officials say monitoring people with dementia it’s ethically dark because some people don’t want to be followed.
Some people who use AirTag say they lack the precision that would be useful in challenging situations.

Alzheimer’s disease was officially listed as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States in 2019 and the seventh leading cause of death in 2020 and 2021, when COVID-19 entered the ranks of the top 10 causes of death.
“Just because someone is diagnosed with dementia doesn’t mean they still can’t make decisions for themselves,” Joseph Gaugler, a professor of long-term care and aging at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, told the WSJ. “It can and should be asked whether it suits them.”

“AirTag sends a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices on the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud, then you can navigate to the Find My app and see it on a map.” website says.

AirTags have been associated with criminals who use them for everything. luggage theft to such extremes as murder.
“AirTag is designed to block unwanted tracking,” Apple says on its website.
